Hirose River and Maebashi City Museum of Literature

Flowing through the center of the city, the Hirose River has been a symbol of Maebashi City that has emphasized the beauty of its natural green setting and pure water. Along the banks of the river are Maebashi City Museum of Literature, Hirosegawa Museum and the monuments of the poets such as Sakutaro Hagiwara and Shinkichi Ito.

Diredtions

To Maebashi City Museum:
By Train and Bus: Get off the JR train at Maebashi Station and take a bus either to Fujimi Onsen Akagiyama or to Fujimi Onsen. Get off the bus at Joutou-machi 2-chome.

To Hirosegawa Museum:
By Train and Bus: Get off the JR train at the Maebashi Station and take a bus to Shibukawa. Get off the bus at Chiyoda-machi 3-chome.

By Car: Both of the museums are located about 15 minutes from Maebashi Exit off the Kannetsu Expressway. After the expressway, take Route 17 to the center of Maebashi City.

Parking: Paid parking lots are available around the river and the museums.

Where to Go around Hirose River

Maebashi City Museum of Literature

Sakutaro Hagiwara is one of the most prominent figures in Japanese modern poetry. His poems as well as his own hand-written letters and some of his belongings are exhibited in a special room.
There is an exhibition room to introduce several poets related to Maebashi City, a gallery for various kinds of events and projects, a reading room and a hall known for its good acoustics.

Closed on Mondays, and the beginning and end of the year usually from Jan. 1st to Jan. 3rd and from Dec. 29th to Dec. 31st.  
Admission Fee: 100 yen
Free for students younger than high school age.


Hirosegawa Museum

The museum is located right next to the bridge named Umaya-bashi across the Hirose River. The building was registered as a national tangible cultural asset after the 2nd World War.
On the first floor, you can listen to SP records on the phonograph and to a piano made by the Steinway & Sons in 1916. Paintings are exhibited on the second floor. The charming views across the river will surely transport you to a place of comfort and relaxation.
